Impaired Driving In Maryland

DUI_Crash

There were reportedly 14 collisions over Memorial Day weekend 2024 in the state of Maryland that were suspected to be related to alcohol. That’s a lot of pain and misery for a little partying.  Some other recent accidents involving drugs and/or alcohol include:

  • A woman who was standing near her car on the shoulder of the road was killed after being hit by an impaired driver in Glen Burnie.
  • A man was killed in Brooklyn Park after a drunk driver proceeded up an exit ramp in the wrong direction in his dump truck and ultimately slammed into his vehicle.
  • A drunk driver ran into a Maryland State Trooper in Rosedale, only to flee the scene of the accident. He was ultimately spotted, arrested, and charged in the hit and run.
  • 13 people who were in a disabled vehicle on the side of the road in Hughesville suffered injuries after a drunk driver careened into the back of their vehicle.

Sadly, the list of these kinds of accidents is virtually endless, because there are simply some drivers who will not say no to drinking and driving. And while the legal penalties for vehicular manslaughter are significant, and possibly getting tougher over time, there’s no end in sight for horrendous accidents related to drugs and alcohol.

Penalties Will Never be Enough

When someone is sentenced to a decade or more in jail after a deadly accident that was the result of driving while impaired, there is some solace in having the dangerous individual off the streets. But for innocent victims and their families who endure serious injuries or death at the hands of a reckless drunk driver, it certainly doesn’t make up for the loss. Nothing ever could. But when it comes to reparations of a sort, there may be some hope.

Personal Injury Lawsuit

Sometimes victims of accidents do not realize that they may have a way to recoup damages to address the aftermath of the tragedy.  Victims may be entitled to payouts to address a number of issues:

  • The cost of medical bills and future medical care;
  • Any current and future earnings losses;
  • Physical impairment or disfigurement;
  • Pain and suffering;
  • Mental anguish;
  • Funeral costs.

While money cannot make up for the loss of a loved one, the law does allow families who lose someone due to the recklessness/negligence of someone else to receive compensation for non-economic damages, as well. That might include loss of love, companionship, and more.
